By April 9, 2019Exercise, Wellness

April is stress awareness month. Stress is becoming another one of those strange epidemics across the country. With the increase in work demands, the lack of raises, family conflicts, the increased time on our phones, and even I-77 traffic never getting better! More than ever people are living in a state of chronic stress that is actually CAUSING health problems, like panic attacks, illnesses, obesity, and even cancer. It’s hard to pull away from family activities, taking care of the kids, demands at work, or even the business of your mind! However, exercise actually reduces your body’s stress hormone. That’s why we’re sharing a list of 3 of the best exercises to reduce stress.

3 of the best exercises to reduce stress

Being active for even just 30 minutes causes your body to produce endorphins, which help your body and mind relax. When you get active, you can get better sleep, a clearer mind, and an improved mood!

  1. Yoga

Yoga can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and lower heart rate. Anyone of any age or fitness level can practice and benefit from yoga. You don’t have to be flexible or strong to hit the mat, and  there are many different styles, forms, and intensities, so you’ll never get bored of this powerful mind-body workout. Try this 15-minute stress relief yoga sequence for beginners.

  1. Gardening

Gardening for about 30-45 minutes a day can burn anywhere from 150 to 300 calories.  Some studies even show gardening leads to a positive mood and promotes relief from acute stress!

  1. Walking/Hiking

Admiring nature calms your brain and melts stress away. No wonder why we crave to get some sunshine after long winter months.. Taking a bike ride, going for a run, or even taking a walk in a park will improve your mood and clear your mind. (We now have a walking club so you don’t have to exercise alone! Contact us if you’re interested in joining, it’s free!) A short 20 minutes can go a long way when it comes to your mental health and physical well-being. (If you’re in the Charlotte area, here’s a great list of hikes!)

Now it’s up to you. Take charge of your stress and help your body recover and heal.
